It is one thing to use your solution focused skills in conversations with children and parents who come along armed with their ‘best hopes’, but what about all the other situations you find yourselves in and all your other roles and tasks where solution focused practice doesn’t seem to fit so easily? How can you make best use of and do most justice to the solution focused approach when you have to sift problem focused referrals, offer risk assessments or diagnostic answers, prescribe or gatekeep precious resources, respond to requests for ‘expert’ advice, or work with very problem focused colleagues or partner agencies?
Jonathan Prosser, a child psychiatrist in Portsmouth, has been grappling with these questions for many years as a consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in CAMHS, and in this workshop he will be sharing his experiences in bringing a solution focus to his work, from referral to case closure, from service development to implementing cuts.
