Solution focused work with children requires special skills because small children do not yet have elaborated language skills and the therapeutic goals are mainly set by adults. Therese Steiner will present step-by-step methods for creating useful conversations with children. She will walk you through many cases taken from her international work with children. You will also learn a visualisation technique, the use of children’s picture books and how to engage the child/the family with drawings and in play.
She will include ways to involve parents and other adults in the solution building process, especially where adolescent and parent appear to have conflicting goals. The emphasis is always on discovery of the extraordinary ability children and their parents and caretakers possess to overcome their difficulties with a little help from professionals.
Therese is a child psychiatrist based in Switzerland, and has taken solution focused brief therapy to some of the world’s most troubled children. A regular visitor to Southern Africa, Nicaragua and other countries suffering disaster Therese has always sought to be where her solution focused skills might be most needed. A long time associate and friend of the first solution focused therapist, Insoo Kim Berg, and co-author with her of Children’s Solution Talk, Therese has more than most to offer professionals in this field.
